Leadership Interview: Professional Identity and Stewardship
In addition to understanding the views of nurses regarding the profession, it is crucial to recognize the perception of leaders in relation to the same aspects. The information that leaders elicit can be compared to the views of nurses to identify the way the nursing profession can be modified to enhance health care delivery. Accordingly, it is important to interview a supervisor on her roles as a team member of healthcare, professionalism, stewardship, and advocacy. The paper will target at sharing my impressions regarding her views and comparing them to the opinions of Marcella.

The Role of the Supervisor as a Health Care Team Member
While answering this question, the supervisor indicated that although she considers herself to be in a higher position than other nurses, she does not merely assign particular duties to her subordinates but also mentors them to ensure that they provide appropriate care to the right patient at the right time. This means that she used transformational leadership when dealing with junior nurses, which is important because it has been found to facilitate proper collaboration at the workplace (Fischer, 2016). Furthermore, her views align with the views of Marcella who values collaborative efforts at the workplace that enhances the efficiency of the working environment. However, Marcella had a limited scope of skills in utilizing her collaborative efforts as compared to the leader possessing more knowledge and expertise in the area required by her professional commitment. Nevertheless, the understanding of one’s roles while employing collaboration and mentorship in a healthcare environment can ensure the provision of comprehensive health services.
The Definition of Professionalism and the Way Professional Responsibility Influences Work
Regarding this question, the nurse supervisor defined professionalism as conducting oneself professionally and personally as per the high duties and expectations of nursing, and she said it enhances her supervisory role. Her views were relevant because nurses are expected to behave professionally by observing the Code of Ethics (Zahedi et al., 2013). However, her opinion differed slightly from the definition of the nurse who defined professionalism as the capability to withstand uncomfortable situations and approach them with confidence and understanding. Nevertheless, a critical analysis of the Code of Ethics, which requires handling patients even in awkward situations contradicting to their personal convictions, makes their views similar. Therefore, the response of the supervisor and her respective viewpoint are crucial as they advocate for the observance of the entire ethical approach instead of looking at its particular components.
Thoughts about Being a Steward of Health Care
Then, I asked the nurse supervisor if she considered herself a steward of health care. She said: “Of course, I am a steward of health care because my role is not only limited to the welfare of the patients but also encompasses the entire nursing staff. Besides, I am answerable to higher authorities, meaning that I have to ensure that the services discharged in this unit meet the required standards”. These views showed that the nurse supervisor was committed to making healthcare better in her unit. Additionally, her ideas were slightly similar to those of Marcella, who considered health stewards as the agents of quality healthcare provision despite not comprehending the medical conditions in entirety. However, the opinion of Marcella regarding this issue was limited to the clinical practice while that of the supervisor incorporated the welfare of both patients and nurses in the entire unit. For that reason, efficient collaboration between nurses and supervisors can improve not only clinical practice but also guarantee the satisfaction of the nursing workforce.
The Importance of Leaders Exercising Professional Advocacy and Authenticity, as well as Power and Influence When Working with Colleagues
Finally, I asked the nurse supervisor if she thought it was necessary for her to ensure professional advocacy and authenticity. She stated: “I am doing just that. I have always made sure that nurses work in better conditions and observe the hospital policies”. Then, I asked her if she thought it was necessary for leaders to exercise power and influence. She responded that “Although nursing leaders have more authority than regular nurses do, they should not oppress their subjects. However, it is necessary for leaders to display the characteristics that the nurses would be glad to follow” (Personal communication, February 22, 2017). The views of the supervisor were essential because they ensured the safety of nurses, an improved image of the hospital, and an enhanced significance of the supervisory role. Speaking of leaders’ subordinates, in as much as Marcella recognized the relevance of professional advocacy, she did not possess much information regarding this issue. Consequently, nurse leaders must teach nurses the importance of professional advocacy and then influence them through their appropriate exemplar actions.
Conclusion
Although nurses and their leaders might differ slightly in their views on various professional aspects, their goals regarding patient care are aligned. For instance, the nurse supervisor in the interview looked at the aspect of professionalism and stewardship from a broader perspective. However, her views and those of the nurse, which were limited to the clinical setting, coincided and both sought to enhance healthcare delivery. Therefore, nurse leaders must encourage their subjects to have a more comprehensive outlook of the nursing profession to facilitate proper nursing care delivery, which is supposed to be the objective of all nursing professionals regardless of the position occupied.
